On Monday, Dan and I had a few errands to run after work (go to the post office and purchase a book for a book club), and we decided it'd be much faster if we just grabbed something to eat along the way. We'd decided to drive to a nearby suburb where they have a Barnes and Noble and a dozen semi-fast eating options. There's falafels! There's pizza! There's sushi There's like three burger places and whatever noodles & company is!
The reason why I'm telling you this story is because we get there, and the power is out. Completely. Traffic lights are out, everything is dark, and nothing is open. At this point, I ask Dan if he wants me to look up another place to eat just outside of this area, because my phone battery is dying. No need, we can just go to the half price books and there's a couple of places to eat there.
Turns out that the Boston Market is gone, the Baja Sol is closed permanently (which we weren't really feeling or we would have just gotten Mexican in our neighborhood), the Dairy Queen was replaced by a non-food serving Orvis, but there's a pannenkoekenhuis and a McDonalds. But first we stop by the Half Price Books.
One of the things that I'd sort of forgotten is that this is the half price books that at some point ended up getting the contents of a magician's house, and there's still some stage magician ephemera that appears from time to time if you scour long enough, so I lost Dan about three seconds after we entered. I spend the last of my cell phone battery looking up the name of the books we're ostensibly in here to buy, and eventually Dan is ready to ask the cashier how much one of the specialty books cost. By the time we're ready to leave, it's 7:45 and the pannenkoekenhuis is closing. I use Dan's phone to try to look up something else to eat, but apparently everything is already closed. Or is a bar and grill. Or is the McDonalds.
We try the McDonalds. Right before we step in, Dan notices that they're showing Fox News. We turn around and leave.
We end up just going to the McDonalds that's close to our house - at least that one won't be showing Fox News. Instead, we step in and a man is behind the counter is yelling at a youngish woman (teenager), and she's yelling back. Eventually he offers her five dollars from her pocket to get her to go away, and she demands more. But there's food, and it'll get there quickly (it's 8pm at this point). It turns out that this Mcdonalds is out of some key ingredients, like cup lids and burgers. That's fine, there's still food. We cobble together something like a meal and finally eat.
Anyway, maybe the moral of this story is that we need to cook more or we need to be open to eating tacos more than once a week.
(also, trying to post more here again)

Thanks! Mostly, I think we've learned that apparently everyone in that suburb cooks at home. At one point, we passed a medical marijuana dispensary - and no food options! This seemed like poor planning on someone's part.
