More Thoughts on Endgame
Apr. 30th, 2019 08:12 pmI've been pretty busy since Friday, and have scheduled myself to continue to be pretty busy for the forseeable future - which means that I haven't really had a chance to read everyone else's endgame reaction posts. Not to mention that the firehose of Endgame analysis and content that's come out since Friday means that I'll never get to most of it. But, having seen it again and had a chance to talk about it in meatspace with a few people, I have a few more thoughts:
1. The film holds up to a second viewing in terms of pacing - the three hours still went by fast.
2. A lot more Nebula feels the second time, especially near the end. The fact that future Nebula shoots past Nebula after past Nebula says she can't change. . .oof.
3. I try not to pay attention to the idea of character growth in the team up movies because it just leads to disappointment - but the fact that everything that Gamora has learned over the course of her two movies has effectively been erased is not a great look. She's got the chance to learn it again, but I'm hoping that maybe this time it comes out of a relationship with Nebula, maybe, instead of treating her as a replacement with the rest of the guardians (though also, her not joining the guardians also means that GoTG is even more dude-heavy - I really don't want Mantis to be the only female character on that team).
4. One of the things that became more clear to me is that it's not even just that 'Fat Thor' is a horrible joke - dramatic Thor didn't work either. And part of the reason why he didn't is because his dramatic moments were unfortunately tied to The Dark World - and they didn't have to be. The reality stone was with the collector for a while - and there's no real reason why Thor's dramatic scenes couldn't have been with Past Loki or current Valkyrie and tied more into Ragnarok, maybe - more discussion as to whether or not he should actually help to save the world and lead.
5. I know that the film implied that Steve went back to the 40's to be with Peggy, but I really like the idea that he caught up with her in the 70's instead: that gives her a lot more time to achieve everything she does without being in Steve's shadow, even gives her time for her first husband before swapping him out for the young hot trophy husband, Roger Stevens. Since I don't buy that Steve would just sit at home and do nothing for 75 years (maybe five to ten if he were real tired and trying), I also imagine that he's out trying to be incognito (as Nomad, probably) and mostly failing
6. I'm even angrier about the way that Natasha was treated at the end of the film after thinking about it for a while - specifically the lack of send-off and funeral (as compared to Tony). In-universe, she's been leading the Avengers for five years, while Tony had been hanging out with his family. In terms of the character's choices, it would have actually made a lot more sense to have Tony have a quiet scene with his family, while Natasha gets the send-off from the people that she was leading. (and I still don't get why Scarlet Witch was the other Nat mourner, other than being a sympathetic female character - literally any other Avenger-adjacent character barring the snapped Guardians would have made more sense)
